ANGOSTURA® the company was created in 1824 by Dr. Johann Siegert who created a recipe for aromatic bitters to be used initially as a medicinal tincture that alleviated stomach ailments. His original recipe of bitters was concocted in 1820 when he moved his family from Germany to Angostura, Venezuela serving as Surgeon General of the armies. At the time his aromatic bitters were used as medical elixirs for the soldiers he served in his medical practice. Over the years as the elixirs became more popular for various uses and aliments, they also became a popular addition to various cocktails and drinks. Dr. Siegert's timing was precise with his creation along with the naming of his bitters company. In 1850 this popularity was the beginning of ANGOSTURA® Bitters to be exported specifically to England, the Caribbean, and the United States. By 1875 Dr. Siegert moved to Trinidad with his 3 sons who, by this point, were immersed in the family business. Over the years they won many accolades from Kings, heads of states, the elite, and the basic house wife. Even though the bitters industry took a hit in 1906 when the FDA regulated it and required the word "cure" to be removed from the label, ANGOSTURA® thrived by creating more flavor profiles becoming a staple for bartenders, mixologists, cocktail enthusiasts, and both professional and home cooks. Still easily the most recognized name in bitters, ANGOSTURA® continues to thrive with over 200 years of allowing ones creativity and imagination to run free. Using only the world's finest Trinitario cocoas from Trinidad and Tobago the deep rich brown hue is abundant with aromas of nutty rich chocolate with some warm spice. Front and center are deep floral nuances followed by rich notes of warm nutty cocoa finishing with warm spices and citrus. Use in an espresso martini or substitute as a twist in your favorite cocktail. You can even use this in a glaze for steaks, pork, veggies, and dessert dishes. The possibilities are endless!!
