Lebanese Arak, similar to Turkey's Raki and Greece's Tsikoudia, is an acquired taste, but what a great taste it is! The Arak Razzouk Distillery's Arak bottling here is made from grape spirits distilled with aniseed. Intense sweet licorice notes aside, another facet of Arak which can overwhelm imbibers who prefer liqueurs with lower alcohol, is that this is bottled at 100 proof. The alcohol content dramatically impacts the flavor (spicy), weight (heavy) and texture (thick). All that said, this ancient transluscent, herbal, grassy and anise-flavored deserves a place on your home bar. In a pinch, it could be an absinthe alternative. 100 proof
