Over 200 years ago Basil Hayden Sr. (a Master Distiller) moved his family and reputation from Maryland to Kentucky's greener pastures to try something new. Legend states that having been new to the area and not knowing how the purists produced bourbon down there, Basil set out to do as he normally would and made a batch using only the ingredients he had on hand. Unaware that by doing this he would offend traditionalists with the composition of his mash, Basil created a unique high-rye mashbill that combined the sweetness of corn with the spicy undertones of rye. Of course, this displeased the purists but not his friends. The others who tried it were also anything but displeased!! Currently owned by Beam Suntory and distilled in the Beam Distillery, Basils Hayden is one of four Bourbon's in the portfolio of the "Jim Beam Small Batch Bourbon Collection". Basil's masterful discovery is paid tribute to by seventh generation Beam family Master Distiller, Fred Noe using a recipe that imbodies Basil's high-rye, small batch bourbon. 63% Corn, 27% Rye, and 10% Malted Barley are combined to created light golden hues. Aromas of ripe peaches and mixed berries are front and center with backnotes of citrus zest, white pepper, and oak. Bottled at 80 proof the palate is considerably light with warm nuances of vanilla, fresh cut oak, and ripe peaches. The mouthfeel is thin but still viscous enough to coat your mouth. Finishing medium with pronounced flavors from the citrus zest, warm oak, toasty vanilla, and sweet honey (from the corn) with nuances of smoke and spice (from the rye). Gentle and easy drinking enjoy this neat or substitute it into your favorite cocktail for a new twist.
