In 1972, Koerner and Joan Rombauer moved their family consisting of 2 children, 2 horses, and 5 dogs to Napa Valley with the hopes of living in a town similar to their childhood home town of Escondido, California. Having attended high school together the 2 didn't begin dating until they met again after college. Armed with an appreciation for the intimate relationship between food and wine after traveling abroad due to Koerner's original career as a commercial pilot, Napa was a no brainer for them. The move was also influenced by Koerner's ancestors since food and wine were literally in his blood. His great aunt (Irma Rombauer) wrote the Joy of Cooking and his ancestors originated from the winegrowing region of Rheingau, Germany, where wine is considered an essential complement to a meal. In 1976 Koerner and Jan became partners with Conn Creek Winery (Bill Beaver and Bill Collins) learning each and every part of the vineyard business from the office work, farming, washing tanks, fermenting/aging, and then working on the bottling line. In 1980 they sell their stake to invest in their own vineyard harvesting their first grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon) from the Stags Leap District. This was the official launch of Rombauer Vineyards. To expand their knowledge more Joan joins the team at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and quickly grows through the company. In 1984 Rombauer Vineyards wines are released under their own official labels the 1980 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1982 Chardonnay to critical acclaim. In 1990 they decided to team up with the Sangiacomo family who at this point was on their third generation of farming Chardonnay grapes. Together they form a lifelong bond and team up as growing partners. Come 2002 (a few years after Joan's passing) Buchli Station Vineyard in Carneros is purchased due to the site being on the edge of San Pablo Bay with the ideal cool-climate making this the "cornerstone" of Rombauer's Chardonnay and Merlot programs. Established in 1980 and now 40 years later Rombauer Vineyards is still family owned by the second- and third-generation members of the family who are still appreciating and growing the family business. Rich, juicy, and creamy the Chardonnay opens up with deep gold hues. Aromas of ripe yellow peaches, mangos, and orange blossom have back notes of vanilla and warm spice. The complex nose lends to the palate with the same flavors but showcasing the mango and vanilla on the front. The rich, creamy mouthfeel is well balanced and structured finishing long with warm vanilla and creamy butter. The process of tank fermentation then barrel racking and stirring the lees every two weeks is what gives this the rich deep flavors and a creamy texture. Enjoy chilled on its own or pair with seafood such as shellfish, creamy dishes, poultry, and any vegan/veggie fare!!
