91pts from Wine Enthusiast. Founded in 1992, the ÖTW (The Federation of Traditional Austrian Winemakers) was formed with the goal to establish a vineyard site classification system to identify exceptional and unique quality terroir sites in Austria. Twenty-three of the ÖTW winemakers have spent almost two decades dedicated to creating this system by carefully observing, judging the wines from all of their vineyards, and then analyzing their development potential in relation to specific qualities. The ÖTW's process is aimed at identifying the very best of their vineyards because not all of the regions have a terroir that can produce a great wine; some consistently produce more refined and complex wines with top aging potential. The first vintage with prime wines that was categorized and marketed under the 'Erste Lage' classification was the 2009 vintage. A logo is displayed on the labels letting one know of the classification levels. This is in co-ordinance with the Danube region's DAC system which is what the ÖTW has concentrated their vineyard classification within. Therefore only dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines may carry the ÖTW logo. With that being said the Moser Karmeliterberg is an ÖTW classified wine and crafted in the "Classic" (exceptional quality) style upheld by the ÖTW. The terroir of Karmeliterberg (meaning the Carmelite Mountain) is a very fine light buff, yellow, and gray soil with sediment throughout. It's layered, loosely packed, and crumbles very easily yet considered one of the most fertile soils in the world because of good soil aeration needed for vine growth and micaceous minerals from the high content of silt. This all contributes to the wine from eyes to nose to mouth. Straw green hues lead into aromas of fresh pears, citrus zest, and white pepper. A rich palate of ripe juicy pear, grapefruit zest, and fresh green herbs leads to a long finish with crisp, clean concentrated minerality. Well structured and balanced enjoy chilled on its own or pair with anything smoked , roasted, and grilled as well as spicy dishes, seafood, charcuterie platters, and veggie dishes.
