The Nickel and Nickel site is located on 42 acres that were originally settled as a farmstead in the 1880s. The farmsteads original Queen Ann-style home was restored in 2002 and after adding a collection of classic barns the historic farmstead was brought back to life!! Now it greets the vineyards guests. The barn collection includes the Gleason Barn originally built in 1770 in Meriden, New Hampshire. This 3,000 square-foot pre-Revolutionary War-era hay barn was dismantled over a two year period and shipped piece by piece to the vineyard after being spared demolition. It was then rebuilt, restored, and turned into the winery's main offices and a winemaking laboratory. All of the vineyard sites are organically farmed and implementing sustainable practices. Located specifically in the Oak Knoll district the Vaca Vista vineyard sits on the valley floor. The incredible soil is clay loam with river deposits. The loam (which is gravelly) has excellent drainage year round and contributes in many ways from aeration to rich mineral composites. The 2017 weather started out cold and wet with a mild (but still) wet spring that accelerated the summer sun. August saw a brief cooling period with a final heat spike at the end of the season over Labor Day Weekend. The cool weather that followed immediately allowed the grapes to hang on the vines longer to develop further. This all lends to a more concentrated flavor profile of the grapes. This 100% Cab showcases the grapes purity from start to finish. Deep, rich garnet red hues edged in purple lead into aromas of ripe black and blue fruits. A lush palate of bruised purple plums, juicy black currants, and savory dried herbs showcases phenomenal structure and balance. The expressive mouth feel runs throughout finishing long and sleek while carrying the same flavors from the palate which are now emphasized by pops of minerality from the crushed stones in the soil. Well balanced and structured this wine is intriguing from your first sip to your last. Enjoy now with hearty, rich dishes or age for some time as it will only get deeper and more complex. This also makes a wonderful gift for a collector!!
