Back in the 18th century, the Mongeard family arrived in Vosne-Romanée, a small village that physically lies in the heart of Burgundy and is known as the heartland where amazing Grand Cru Pinot Noir is produced. The family has had more than 8 known generations working in the wine industry as growers and producers since 1620. Records at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti show the family worked as winegrowers as well as winemakers dating back to 1786. So it's no wonder that the future generations had a passion for the industry!! Come the 20thcentury Eugene Mongeard and Edmee Mugneret inherited the family property. Having both descended from families in the wine industry, they ended up forming a super-group featuring some of the most prime districts that Pinot was ever planted in. Their son Jean Mongeard started making wine in 1945 at the age of 16 because when Eugene passed away years before there was no one else to do the job and Jean wanted to carry on the family business. It was at this time that Baron le Roy, Marquis d'Angerville, and Henri Gouges purchased Jean's entire crop with Gourges instructing him to bottle and sell the wine himself. This was the start of Jean's family business farming, vinifying, and producing his own wine. Then in 1975 Jean had his son Vincent start working alongside him. Vincent was handed the reins and over time he was responsible for the viticulture and vinification of all of the domaine's wines. He continued to utilize his father's methods of traditional bottling usually without filtration only when certain vintages require it. In 1995, Jean retired so Vincent assumed complete leadership of the domaine. Currently, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret covers a total area of more than 75 acres that is split among 35 appellations all still worked by the family themselves. Bright ruby hues edged in violet leads into aromas of ripe red fruits, truffles, and spice. The palate is complex with ripe red berries, rich black fruits, and earthy mushrooms. Finishing long and delicate with fresh cherry, pepper, and pops of salinity enjoy on its own or pair with roasted veggies, Asian fare, and any poultry dish.
