86 points from Wine Enthusiast. Karl Kaspar wines are one of the labels owned by a co-op named Moselland . Formed in 1968 with the merger of several small co-operatives they are a prime source of excellent quality wines at fair and affordable prices. Nowadays the co-op is based in the famous twin wine towns of Bernkastel-Kues which lie within the heart of the Mosel river valley. The growers all have a hand in the production process from growing to bottling to labeling and including the retail sector. This allows them to share their resources which allow them to produce wines in a wide range of styles from all over Germany with Riesling being their specialty. 45% Riesling Spätlese from Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg (middle Mosel) and 55% Riesling Kabinett from Ellenzer Goldbäumchen (lower Mosel) are blended from two single vineyard sites with grapes at different ripeness levels. This creates a classic Mosel profile that's off-dry with intense mineral and floral aromas, low alcohol, and balanced sweetness yet having crisp acidity. The Spätlese specifically adds depth and richness to the Kabinett. Delicate aromas of freshly cut lemon, ripe raspberries, and green brush waft into a concentrated palate of juicy citrus fruits and creamy pears. Well balanced and structured this full bodied Riesling finishes long with clean, crisp citrus rounded out with concentrated minerality. Zesty, refreshing, and easygoing enjoy chilled on its own or pair with lighter meals such as seafood, veggie dishes, charcuterie platters, and as an aperitif.
