95pts from Wine Enthusiast and 94pts from Wine Spectator as well as wine #33 for Wine Spectator's Top 100 in 2018. Used as a meeting hall during the Age of Enlightenment it's no doubt that's how Jacques de Bergeron(one of the king's highest servants)met the vineyards heiress Marie Dejean. Married May 30,1720 they started distributing their wines throughout Bordeaux and the Scandinavian countries. In 1797 Monsieur Ducru acquired the property naming the estate Chateau Branaire-Ducru after the "beautiful pebbles" in the terroir. Multiple generations of the Ducru family ran the estate and were the driving power that garnered a classification of Second Growth during the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. The family sold the property in 1866 to Nathanial Johnston (an engineer. The chateau flourished under his family's ownership even after the death of his first wife and later when he married a Turkish Princess. Unfortunately, 54 years later America enforced Prohibition, the Great Depression hit, and the chateau had multiple poor vintages. They left in 1928 and the chateau sat empty becoming run down dropping to a fourth growth classification. Finally in 1942 the owner of a Pauillac estate, Francis Borie, purchased the site bringing it back to life and back to a Second Growth classification!! 60 years later the Borie family is still at the helm and not slowing down having owned multiple estates throughout Bordeaux since 1720!! Each generation has immersed themselves in all aspects of the family business from becoming winegrowers, oenologists and epicureans. At 120 acres the site is composed of different blocks with 70 different parcels of vines, the best being near the chateau which is closest to the Gironde River. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc is blended then aged for 18 months in French Oak consisting of 60% new. Gorgeous hues of deep garnet-purple showcase aromas of fresh red berries, dried dark flowers, truffles, and warm spices. The luscious and dark palate is concentrated with baked black fruits, bruised purple fruits and flowers, toasty baking spices, and warm ginger with pops of vanilla creating complexity and depth leading into the finish. Finishing long and silky with creamy dark fruits, truffles, mocha, coffee, and nuances of vanilla molasses, cellar up to 2025 or drink now for a soft experience. Enjoy on its own or pair with creamy cheese boards, Charcuterie, and roasted dishes.
