DOMAINE LAFOND LIRAC ROUGE 2015, Rhone
Availability: In stock
Domaine LAFOND is currently on its newest generation having been in the family since 1780 when the governor of Tavel, Pascal Odoyer (Jean-Pierre Lafond's great-uncle), became one of the first wine growers in his village. Over time he handed the estate down to his son. In 1948, the first private cellar of Tavel is built by Valéry Taulier (grandfather of Pascal Lafond) and father-in-law to Jean-Pierre Lafond who is the current owner with his son. The building of this cellar was imperative to creating links between Tavel and Burgundy. In 1970 Jean-Pierre Lafond decides to builds his own wine estate and name it "Roc-Epine" in honor of his favorite hobby, horse racing's famous horse Roquepine. Pascal Lafond joins his father in 1978 and starts working the estate, learning the ins and outs of the family business. It is then that he and his father decide to only craft wines in the appellations of Tavel, Lirac, and Côtes du Rhône. After 23 years the two decide to add Châteauneuf du Pape into their portfolio when they purchased 87 acres which only produces 4,00 bottles. After making the jump over the Rhône, they started to remodel and upgrade their sites over the years as well as start the process for organic certification in 2009 finalizing it in 2012. Come 2015 Pascal's son, Jean-Baptiste starts his studies in viticulture and oenology in Beaunes and is next in line to inherit the family business. 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre are blended creating deep ruby hues edged in violet. Powerful and complex throughout aromas of vanilla, sour cherries, and dark chocolate lead into a lush palate of red and black fruits and dark chocolate fudge. The finish is long and rich with warm vanilla and spicy black pepper. Bold yet smooth and deep this is ready to drink or cellar for 5-10 years. Enjoy on its own or pair with a charcuterie board of creamy cheeses, spicy salamis, fig spread, and rich chocolates.
