92pts from Wine Advocate. Howell Mountain (the home to Arkenstone) was the very first sub AVA of Napa in 1984 thanks to a few iconic pre-prohibition wineries putting it on the map!! Ron and Susan Krausz were drawn to the unique property in the late 1980's and finally purchased it in 1988. They were drawn to the unique land with its rare history showcasing dry-stack walls made of ancient local stone and stunning remnants of Native Obsidian work. Their commitment was (and still is) to seek out the best old-world practices while honing the newest technology in their vineyards and the winery itself. They continually aim to evolve while producing the highest quality wines possible. After allowing their vines to accurately mature, their first vintage was produced in 2006. Farmed organically from the beginning, the Krausz's are using biodynamic and sustainable practices in all facets such as establishing a bee colony and having owls on site. Amazingly they also share the beauty and mystery of Arkenstone with bears, coyotes, mountain lions, rattle snakes, scorpions, various raptors, and naughty grape eating wild turkeys!! Crafted from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the must is aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. This lends to the complexity and richness when blending grapes from 3 separate vineyard sites (Calistoga, Pritchard Hill, and the Howell Mountain Estate). The grapes from each site add their own unique flavor profiles to create a true, bold California Cab. Garnet hues edged in deep purple leads into a nose of purple and blue flowers followed by deep, dark jammy fruits. The palate is rich with black cherries, cassis, and dark berries. The finish is long with chewy, juicy dark fruits, mocha, baked herbs, and pops of minerality. Enjoy on its own or with a hearty stew, BBQ, and any roasted fare. This bold Cab will stand up to anything heavy!!
